Learning Goal I can explain and compare the social structure of ancient Egypt, India, China and Mesopotamia. Indicator 6:1CO Compare the development of social systems among the early river valley civilizations.

I'm learning goals today will be how can how to how to compare the development of writing in ancient Egypt India China and Mesopotamia again we're still working under the on the development of social systems among the early river valley civilization are essential question steel and we're still working on the same central question what was necessary for the development of cradles of civilization as people moved from a nomadic existence to a settled life the criteria for Mastery by the end of the lesson you should be able to State the language that was developed by the Sumerians Egyptians Indus and Huang He Valley civilizations why did language develop among these early civilizations according to the discoveries made by historical historians and archaeologists how was written language used initially and why is the Rosetta Stone an important discovery take a minute to read these words try to determine what the following words mean and determined in which language they're written all of these words mean I love you the top one is in Spanish Dan French grapes and Irish our first lesson is on the Egyptian writing of hieroglyphics writing began in Egypt around 3,000 BC there were different types of writing for different occasions hieroglyphics were ideograms used for formal writing a democratic was a simplified version of Egyptian writing carve the name the Egyptians called the writing on Stone a road or path has a form of paper made from weed that grew along the Nile River no they had formal writing and informal writing and in a way you have formal writing and informal writing the way you write your papers for school can be considered formal writing the way you to your friends such as a text message or SnapChat or on Facebook can be seen as informal writing it's not the same well the Egyptians have formal writing and informal writing is well the Rosetta Stone for a long time archaeologists were unable to translate hieroglyphics the discovery of the Rosetta Stone for the translation of hieroglyphics it contain the same passage in three different languages of Wessex Greek and images so before I started preparing for this lesson the Rosetta Stone was like the program that you get when you want to learn a new language and in a way this is what this is because it did teach them how to translate hieroglyphics it did teach them basically a new language because they could not translate to hieroglyphics before the Rosetta Stone this is the Egyptian hieroglyphics take the time to look at this the hieroglyphics what characters of our alphabet do you not see there are several characters of of bet you do not see there's no e there's no l there's no o no Novi No Ex why scuse me there is a y nosey so we cannot use hieroglyphics to write some of the words that we have in our language today because they major characters that are missing Mesopotamian writing the Sumerians developed cuneiform as a form of writing that different from pictograph in that symbols represent examples of parts of Worlds was written on clay tablets with a stylus scribes were hired to keep track of items people traded and alarm points for rent in using cuneiform this is Acuna form alphabet we could probably use cuneiform for our to write for us because they use the same characters alphabetical characters are also in there alphabetical list a Chinese writing Oracle same way but however that's how they started their original script this is the earliest Chinese language I don't know Chinese but to me it looks like the same characters that I see on the menu when I go order my Chinese food I'm sure if I was Chinese I could probably see the difference that time has made in the characters but to me it looks very much the same although I'm sure there are differences the last one is India India's writing system language developed in India in the first two cities of harappa and mohenjo Scholars have not been able to decode the Moroccan language they don't know what happened in harappa because no one even to this day has been able to eco the Harappan language is still on the coded as of now the Aryan civilization developed Sanskrit the most important language of ancient India no as in without language we have different dialects people in the South say things a certain way people in the North May pronounce some different Works differently people in the midwest made now certain words even different from the south or the North they're the same words just that we use different pronunciations of different words or eye dialect what India is a large country and they have several different so to speak of Sanskrit but the overall Sanskrit that were talking about what's the first and it was the most important in Ancient India first Sanskrit was on written I mean only spoken but eventually they started writing it now it's no longer spoken is still written but it's no longer smoking can't take a minute to look at the picture of the sand script characters when I looked at the Sun script character what I saw was they use pretty much look like the same characters one looks like a 3 this looks like the man medical symbol symbol for pi this looks like a either sr15 SoulCycle upside down B but to me they looked all up this looks like a t so to me they say they use a lot of the same characters They just added a different Mark like a swirl here or out there I'll check for understanding class notebook where's the check for understanding you need to answer these questions how to clean a form different from picture graphs why was it impossible archaeologist to translate hieroglyphics and what was one of the first uses uses of the written language and how are the languages similar and how are they different again this is in your class notebook in the Content Library under checks understanding reason we went to the close notes was all of these questions came directly from your clothes notes so if you've been following along
